It is hard to believe that I joined Edinburgh Food Social more than a year ago. These past 12 months have flown by; each week a blur of learning and excitement. Now, as I pause to reflect, I’m filled with gratitude, fulfilment, and a renewed sense of purpose. I’m also reminded that this anniversary isn’t just a personal milestone but a testament to the collective efforts of everyone involved in our mission.

When I first started at Edinburgh Food Social, I was eager but uncertain. Unlike our chef-activists, I have never worked in food or hospitality before and was concerned that this might make me ill-prepared to work in an organisation that’s underpinned by food and cooking. I needn’t have worried; the spirit of collaboration and compassion that defines Edinburgh Food Social was evident in every project I joined. Edinburgh Food Social was, and remains to be, a welcoming environment in which to learn.

Aside from practical skills, I quickly learnt that Edinburgh Food Social is an organisation bound together by a shared commitment to alleviating food insecurity and supporting the greater Craigmillar community. With like-minded colleagues surrounding me, I soon became confident in my role as administrator.

Over the past year, my role has grown and shifted to suit the needs of this busy organisation. From organising catering orders, to lending a hand as front of house staff, exploring funding opportunities, and helping out at cookery classes, my ever-changing list of tasks ensures that every day at Edinburgh Food Social is as varied as the last. More importantly, my varied workload has allowed me to witness the impact of Edinburgh Food Social’s work firsthand. Attending cookery classes, including those held at The Venchie, and seeing the children serve lunches they’ve prepared with pride and enjoyment, makes all our behind-the-scenes effort more than worth it.

Reaching my first work anniversary also gives me the chance to reflect on the incredible team I’m fortunate enough to work with. The dedication, creativity, and resilience of our staff and volunteers are what make Edinburgh Food Social so special. Their support and passion have made this past year not only successful but deeply rewarding. As a bonus, I truly believe that my home cooking has never been better.

Milestones are an opportunity to look forwards as well as backwards, and I am filled with hope and excitement for what’s to come. There are still many challenges ahead, but with the support of our community and the strength of our collective efforts, I am confident that we will continue to make a significant impact on the local area’s food culture.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my learning, and I’ll hopefully see you at Edinburgh Food Social’s next event.
