Flour: Where to Begin?

As a milled grain that has reached each and every continent, flour is an integral part of millions, if not billions, of people’s diets (and it has been for thousands of years). We use it in so many different ways, from making pasta to baking bread. In our humble opinion, flour is the cornerstone of an incredible array of comforting, delicious foods.

Unfortunately, not everyone is comfortable cooking with flour. Baking bread can seem intimidatingly technical and making pasta, pizza and other flour-based foods is often viewed as a daunting task.

At Edinburgh Food Social, we want everyone to feel empowered to make excellent, flour-based foods at home. That’s why we launched our Fun with Flour class during summer last year and have continued to hold it at regular intervals ever since. (Our next Fun with Flour class will be held on Saturday, 15 March, 11:00 – 15:00. Sign up by clicking here.)

What does Fun with Flour Consist Of?

Fun with Flour is an interactive four-hour class that involves our team of highly trained chef-activists teaching you how to make soda bread, pasta and sweet treats, all from scratch. While we teach you how to make specific recipes, these skills can be used to make all sorts of flour-based foods, including pizza dough.

Aside from giving you valuable skills, Fun with Flour is also, as the name suggests, great fun! Previous times we’ve held this class, like during the 2024 Edinburgh Food Festival, flour was soon flying everywhere as people of all ages rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in – we’d encourage you to do the same.

Soda Bread

Knowing how to make soda bread is a great skill to have. Baking this bread uses cupboard staples and a little bit of science to produce a bouncy, delicious loaf that is begging to be slathered in butter. Happily, all class attendees have the opportunity to sample the loaves they make; there is nothing more satisfying than enjoying warm bread that you’ve baked yourself!

To make matters even better, the soda bread is ready in as little as an hour, meaning that, after attending the class, you can turn out a brilliant loaf whenever it suits you.

Pasta

In the pasta section of the class, we bring flour and egg yolks together to form a beautiful, golden dough. After a fair bit of kneading, we then experiment with shaping the dough into several of the pasta shapes you know and love. We then work on making some sauces before tucking into the delicious fresh pasta all together. Be sure to come to class hungry!

Whereas baking soda bread is a skill you’ll probably use in private, making pasta is great for entertaining. Once you’ve attended Fun with Flour, you will have the skills necessary to invite friends or family over for a delicious pasta feast or a fun-filled pasta-making evening of your own.

A Sweet Treat

Aside from pasta and soda bread, our team of chef-activists will also teach you how to make a sweet treat. This could be anything from madeleines to a cake. Either way, be sure to bring an empty Tupperware box so you can take many of these treats home with you.

If this mixture of learning, eating and experimenting sounds like your idea of fun, then sign up to our Next Fun with Flour class (which will be held on Saturday, 15 March 11:00 – 15:00 at the EFS kitchen) by clicking here.

We look forward to seeing you there!
